Research, research, research! The first stage of this phase of the book was to get inspiration for the art style and more practical information for colors, fonts and layout.
I went to the children's book section in my local library and picked out any book that caught my eye. I flipped through them and when I liked certain colors, art styles or compositions I took a picture. I think the book I liked the most was Joan Procter the Dragon Doctor. It had a mix of full page and partial page illustrations with a textured and stylized look.
Along with these pictures, I had a few art books that inspired me including this book:

Thinking ahead to the book front/back/side cover, I took pictures of designs that stood out to me when browsing. I hope to some of this design tactics on my cover!
I had completed a draft of the whole book here:
But there is still a lot of work to go for it to be finished!
This week I have also been working on the writing for the book. For so few sentences on each page, it sure is a lot of work! Narrowing down a story to concise, short rhymes is a challenge, but a fun one. I am getting my friends who are great writers to review a draft I have now and hope to really get rolling on the artwork for the book soon!
